Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are a versatile sporting dog known to enthusiast as “Griffs.” They are very people-oriented and thrive on human contact. Griffs are known for their ease of training and willingness to cooperate both at home and in the field. This does not mean that they each do not come with a stubborn streak, especially in adolescence. Griffs are very intelligent dogs with a drive to understand and learn. In comparison to other sporting dogs Griffs are a “soft” breed that works best under a gentle, yet firm hand.

OUR KENNEL

Goldeneye Kennels

Hello, welcome to Goldeneye Kennels. We are located in Gillette, Wyoming. My name is Sarah Gregory. I am a recent graduate of the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming. I received a B.S. in Molecular Biology with Honors and a minor in Spanish and a B.S. in Physiology. I am currently taking a short break from academia to learn more about the healthcare profession. I will start medical school in Fall 2013. I have a strong interest in public health and hope to be actively involved in my community while continuing to be a student of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. My parents Randy and Barb Gregory are a very important part of our kennel. They help train our dogs and are actively involved in their day-to-day life from competition to hunting. My parents are also involved with raising our litters.

Over Time

Over the years I have worked with my dogs to complete their titles. My first dog was surprisingly a toy poodle named Buddy. Buddy taught me many things and helped me find and embrace the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon breed. I enjoy all aspects of the dog world and believe that it is very important to keep the Griffon a versatile sporting dog. Also, to make sure our Griffons will be more than a dog, but rather a member of the family. This is critical to Griffon development and livelihood. They are not meant to be “kennel” dogs, but rather to be curled up next to you in the house. I show and train in obedience, conformation, agility, rally, and hunting. My family and I also spend time in the field hunting.

Knowledge!

I have attended seminars by Corky Vroom, Elicia Calhoun, Dr. Greg Burns, Dr. Richard Wheeler, Dr. Carmen Battaglia, and Dr. Trevor Arnold. I have had experience showing a variety of dogs including: Golden Retrievers, Siberian Huskies, Pomeranians, Shelties, American Water Spaniels, German Shepards and of course, Griffons! The Griffon works as a hunting dog in both the upland and waterfowl environment. The Griffon’s nose makes them adept at tracking game. Their versatility in the field makes them useful for almost any game in any season. While discussing the Griffon it is important to look at their role as a versatile companion. They have a strong prey drive and a natural ability to point, but they also have a fun-loving side that enjoys competing in obedience, agility, conformation, rally, tracking, and whatever other activities their human-companion can think of to keep them busy. Griffons are wonderful family dogs that enjoy being active.

The Griffon began development in the Netherlands. Eduard Karel Korthals wanted to create the ultimate walking hunter’s gun dog. After working to develop the breed, Korthals had the opportunity to spread the breed throughout Europe with the help of a French Duke. Korthals continued work on the breed and moved his kennel to Germany. Later a disease swept through his kennel delaying progress, but Korthal’s friends (especially in France) continued to work on developing the breed.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a medium-sized dog that has a harsh coat and excels in both pointing and retrieving game. They have a friendly temperament and are known as the “Supreme Gun Dog”.
